Traditionally known as a smoker’s bow or captain’s chair, this example is likely made from elm, with a gently shaped saddle seat and a rich, dark tone that highlights the natural grain. The curved backrest and scrolled arms are supported by turned spindles, with turned legs and cross stretchers below. The proportions are generous and the chair is comfortable and sturdy, suitable for everyday use at a desk or dining table.
Condition:
Very good overall antique condition. Solid and well-constructed, with secure joints and no movement. Comfortable to sit in. Age-related surface marks and wear, as to be expected from a piece of this age, but nothing structural or distracting.
